Stay safe and healthy during the holiday season

It is the holiday season, and many may be planning or attending gatherings to celebrate. With COVID-19, flu, and RSV circulating it is important to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your community safe. You can help ensure a safe and healthy holiday season by following the tips listed in this article, including staying up to date on vaccinations. Doing so significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and transmission.

Here are some tips to help prevent spreading and catching respiratory viruses:

  • Wear a high-quality, well-fitting facemask (such as an N95 or KN95) in crowded areas and indoor public spaces.
  • Improve indoor ventilation by opening windows and doors and using air filtration devices.
  • Get tested promptly if you have symptoms and get treatment early if you’re eligible (you can order free home COVID-19 tests from the federal government, see more information below).
  • If you’re sick, stay home and away from others, especially away from people who may be at high risk for severe disease. While you might experience mild symptoms, a COVID, flu or RSV infection can be a serious illness for small children, older people, pregnant people, and people with chronic conditions, such as compromised immune systems.

How to get vaccinated
COVID-19 vaccines are covered by most insurance plans with no out-of-pocket costs, including King County’s Regence and Kaiser medical plans. Check with your pharmacy, healthcare provider, or visit Vaccines.gov to search for an appointment. Kaiser Permanente members can learn about their options at COVID-19 Vaccine Appointments | Kaiser Permanente.

Check kingcounty.gov/vaccine for more information, including options if you are uninsured. You can also read more on how to get vaccinated on this Balanced You blog.

Free COVID tests
As COVID-19 continues to spread, it is important to be prepared. Each household can, once again, place an order for four free COVID-19 rapid tests delivered directly to your home. If you did not order tests earlier this fall, you may place two orders for a total of eight tests. To order, visit COVID.gov – Free at-home COVID-19 tests or call 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489). Order yours today.
