In our ever-changing world, it’s crucial to acknowledge the profound impact of modern life on mental health. While technology connects us globally, it can also contribute to feelings of isolation and overwhelm. Loneliness, exacerbated by constant connectivity, is a growing concern, affecting approximately half of U.S. adults.
May is Mental Health Month and this year’s theme is “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World.” During Mental Health Month, Balanced You will raise awareness of the important role mental health plays in our lives during modern times by providing tips, events, and resources to help employees of King County:
- Learn how modern life affects mental health with new resources to navigate our changing world.
- Take action by building a coping toolbox to manage stress, difficult emotions, and challenging situations.
- And support the mental health of loved ones, as well.

If you think you may be experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition and are unsure of where to start, King County’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Making Life Easier (MLE), and employee health benefits-covered counselors are there for you. It’s important to remember that working on your mental health takes time. Change won’t happen overnight. Instead, by focusing on small changes, we can move through the stressors of modern life and develop long-term strategies to support ourselves — and others — on an ongoing basis.
