Eye exams are critical to caring for your eyes, vision, and overall health. Regular eye exams promote eye health and help detect the signs of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
As a benefits-eligible King County employee, you have access to comprehensive vision insurance through Vision Service Plan (VSP). Your vision benefits include an eye exam every 12 months, eye glass lenses (Single, Bifocal, Trifocal) every 12 months, and more.
When should I get an eye exam?
It is important to start you eye care journey early. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that children have at least one eye exam between the age of three and five years. Beyond the age of five, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that anyone diagnosed with diabetes should receive an eye exam every year, anyone at higher risk for glaucoma should receive an eye exam every two years, and anyone with concerns about their vision should access an eye exam as soon as possible. It’s always best to check with your primary care provider for guidance on recommended care.
Why are eye exams important?
More than 270 health conditions can be detected during an eye exam and 90% of blindness caused by diabetes is preventable through early detection. Early treatment of eye disease is important and can help keep your vision strong. Vision loss and corrective vision measures such as contact prescriptions, protective eyewear, blue light filtering lenses, and more, are also priorities during a regular eye exam.
